Close to 80 members of the ONE Wake Affordable Housing Team met Tuesday night to discuss and shape our 2021 power strategy for affordable housing.

Context

Last year ONE Wake identified six parcels of county owned land suitable for affordable housing development. These parcels represent roughly 50 acres of land total. They are located within Raleigh, Cary, Holly Springs, Wendell, and Wake Forest (see full report here).

During our founding assembly last fall, County Commissioners pledged to work with ONE Wake to champion the construction of affordable housing on these parcels. Now our goal is to ensure that this land is used to its maximum potential for affordable housing construction.

The issue is ensuring that there is sufficient local funding and political support from each municipality in which the land is located.

2021 Power Strategy

Our opportunity this fall is to win support for affordable housing construction on county owned land though a series of strictly non-partisan public actions with candidates from each of the above municipalities.

During these actions, candidates would react to specific proposals prepared by the affordable housing team - on the county land issue, and potentially 1-2 other housing issues specific to each town or city.

Given that off year, municipal elections are historically low turnout and low information, ONE Wake is in a strong position to make affordable housing a top election issue this fall.

Decisions and Next Steps

The Affordable Housing Team committed to break into municipal sub-groups to begin a series of research actions necessary to prepare proposals for our candidate actions this fall. Team members elected co-chairs for each group who will coordinate with ONE Wake organizers to set the agenda for each meeting below.
