From the NC Association of Eduators:
On May 1, thousands of educators, parents, faith leaders, and community members are coming together in Raleigh for the Kids Over Corporations March and Rally. North Carolina is 50th out of 50 states in school funding and together we are going to change that. ONE Wake is pleased to partner with this effort to bring attention to this important event.
WHY WE ARE COMING TO RALEIGH
North Carolina's kids deserve better and on May 1 we are going to Raleigh to demand it. Join thousands of educators, parents, students, and community members at Halifax Mall in downtown Raleigh for the Kids Over Corporations March and Rally.
THE PROBLEM
- NC is 50th out of 50 states in public school funding effort.
- Since 2013, state leaders have handed corporations and the wealthy nearly $18 billion a year in tax cuts. The corporate tax rate is headed to zero by 2030. Meanwhile, our kids get overcrowded classrooms, underpaid teachers, and crumbling school buildings.
- At the same time, over $1 billion in public money is being diverted to private school vouchers — the majority of which go to families already in private schools.
- They chose corporations over kids. Vouchers over classrooms. The wealthy over working families.
WHAT WE WANT
We are organizing with a clear demand: put kids first.
- Invest $20,000 per student in North Carolina's public schools by 2030
- End the corporate tax cuts that are draining our schools dry
- Eliminate the private school voucher program
- Reclaim our democracy with fair maps and restore checks and balances
- Give public school workers the right to organize and bargain collectively
