With more than 60 ONE Wake members present on April 28, 2026, the Cary Town Council debated the extent to which the Town would use its own General Funds to support the Annual Action Plan for affordable housing. For the past 4 years, the Town has kept the funding at or above the “penny per $100” of property tax threshold; in 2026-27, the initial recommendation was to decrease that amount. After the public hearing and debate, in which ONE Wake was mentioned significantly, the council voted 5-1 in favor of increasing the amount by $750,000, bringing it back in line with prior years. You can watch that public hearing segment here.

In Morrisville, Fairview Spring (the groundbreaking affordable housing complex for seniors) faced opposition from neighbors during a rezoning hearing. ONE Wake mobilized members in Morrisville to attend the council meeting on May 12 to speak out in support of the project. We urged the council to consider not just those who can move into luxury neighborhoods, but to remember those who relocate to this area to be close to family for support as they age. Increasing numbers of seniors are being forced out of the county as rents increase along with their medical bills. The Town voted to unanimously approve the rezoning for Fairview Spring, whose developers also agreed to concessions in response to residents' concerns about parking and road improvements. Read about it here or watch the public comments recording here.

These actions by ONE Wake are further examples of our commitment to equipping families and communities to participate with power in the public decisions that impact their lives. We must continue to be active participants in local government decisions across all parts of Wake County.
