Leaders from Wake County Sponsors are invited to participate in a Durham CAN assembly with 500 delegates on October 27. CAN leaders will meet with, introduce carefully crafted proposals and get public reactions from the new District Attorney, new Sheriff, and all judicial candidates.

The action will be followed by a massive Souls to the Polls event where hundreds of people will vote early.

During the non partisan action our sister network will address the role of the local judicial apparatus in perpetuating a robust and extensive schedule of “user fees” used to subsidize the system.

Since almost all criminal defendants are indigent, the fees work a formidable set of hardships for most litigants. Huge numbers become trapped in a cycle of poverty: increased debts and ancillary punishments – probation extensions, license revocations, and sometimes even incarceration.

Corporate insurance companies with vested interests are largely behind the way the bail system works today, and they are also the largest beneficiaries of it. These same companies have funded many campaigns for DAs and judges across the country.

We hope leaders from Wake County Sponsors will use this invitation as an opportunity to observe and evaluate an IAF action, as a way to get a better sense of what we could build together in Wake County.

Will you come?
